Make an Adjustment: Important Whiplash Prevention Tips

November 25, 2014

whiplash preventionWhiplash injuries occur when your head is snapped back suddenly further than normal, which is also known as hyperextension. Symptoms of whiplash can range from mild to severe and include, but are not limited to stiffness in the neck, restricted movement of your head, pain in your neck and shoulders due to muscle strain and in some cases, dizziness, headaches and tingling in the arms.

Many things can cause whiplash injuries. However, rear-end motor vehicle collisions are the most common. These injuries can also happen when playing contact sports, riding amusement park rides and falls, particularly in children. Luckily, there are ways to prevent whiplash. Here are a few things you can do to protect yourself and your children from whiplash injuries:

  • Always wear seat belts and ensure your head rest is in proper position in your vehicle. Children that require car seats or boosters should always be fastened into them properly. If your child is old enough to use a regular seat belt without an aid, your vehicle should also have a head restraint for children in the back seat.

  • Make sure property safety equipment is always used when you or your child is playing sports. Protect your neck and head and teach children to do the same.

  • If riding amusement park rides, make sure to ride them correctly making use of the safety belts or restraints provided.

  • Monitor your children’s play and ensure they’re not in a position to fall on their head or neck.

If you have a whiplash injury, you should seek the advice of your chiropractor immediately. They will perform an analysis for you and develop a care plan to help relieve your pain and restore proper movement in a non-invasive, yet highly effective manner.
