Vertigo, Dizziness and Chiropractic Care

March 25, 2014

Vertigo causes patients to experience recurrent spinning sensations, issues with balance and dizziness that can interfere with daily life. Often, there is no specific cause that can be linked to the occurrence of vertigo, and when it’s not linked to other ailments, such as Menier’s disease or migraine, this condition is called Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo or BPPV.

Many studies have linked BPPV to some form of head or neck trauma, which has led researchers to believe that a spinal condition may be related to the cause. This stands to reason since many cases of vertigo are also attributed to inner ear problems or central nervous system disturbances. As a result, chiropractic care has been tested for efficacy in reducing the frequency and severity of attacks of vertigo or BPPV.

In one study published in the U.S. National Library of Medicine, patients were divided into two groups and received either chiropractic or clinical care for a period of eight weeks. While a small percentage of patients under clinical care reported improvement in their overall condition, all patients treated with spinal adjustments reported improvement in balance and most reported that their frequency of dizzy spells decreased. Although the study is preliminary and further research is required, this presents a valid argument that chiropractic care is effective at reducing the discomfort and frequency of BPPV symptoms.

Other studies have been performed to determine the effect of chiropractic care for those who suffer from vertigo due to inner ear problems, such as chronic infections or calcium deposits that have formed. Patients who have received spinal adjustments from doctors of chiropractic have suffered fewer ear infections, and 80 percent of patients reported that their symptoms of vertigo stopped after as few as four treatments.

The bottom line in chiropractic care — if you’re alive and have subluxations, you’re better off alive without nerve interference. Chiropractic Lifecare of America wishes for everyone to have access to high-quality and affordable chiropractic care.
