CLA Update: Chiropractic is Better Than Medical Care for Back Pain

May 28, 2014

Today, more and more people are realizing chiropractic care as a more natural means of easing back pain, and studies are consistently proving that those who receive spinal adjustments fare far better than those who do not.

The journal Spine conducted a study that focused on a group of military personnel with back pain issues. In some cases the pain was quite debilitating. Of the 91 people studied, all received medical care, while half also participated in chiropractic care for their back pain. 73 percent of those who underwent chiropractic care achieved moderate to substantial improvement of their pain while only 17 percent of the medical-only patients reported the same. The chiropractic group also reported consistently lower disability scores.

A doctor of chiropractic can perform an in-depth analysis of your condition to determine the cause of your pain. More often than not, the cause is subluxation (misalignment) of the vertebrae which causes nerve interference. Using skilled techniques, your chiropractor can make adjustments, which will improve the alignment and spacing between the affected vertebrae. This will help relieve pressure on the nervous system, most often resulting in less pain.

Although adjustments are a highly effective, drug-free way to help relieve back pain, your doctor of chiropractic may also recommend additional steps in your care plan. Proper nutrition, strengthening exercises for your core and back and massage therapy are just a few of the additional things that may be part of your recovery. Chiropractors use a holistic approach to achieve whole body health and improvement. As a result, these adjustments will speed up the healing process and help you return to former activities much faster than with medical treatment alone.
