CLA Update: Chiropractic Care Can Ease Cervical Disc Herniation

June 30, 2014

Cervical disc herniation occurs when the outer protective layer of a disc is torn or cracked, and the gel-like cushion from the center of the disc pushes through into the space occupied by nerves and your spinal cord. Some symptoms may include pain that radiates to the arm, numbness or tingling down the arm and weakness in various arm muscles, depending on the site of herniation. In many cases, harmful drugs such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAIDS) medications combined with steroids are prescribed. In more serious cases, surgery may be advised, which may affect your range of motion for the remainder of your life.

Chiropractic Care

Research has shown that chiropractic care can ease the symptoms of cervical disc herniation, even in cases that have become chronic. A team of Swiss researchers performed a study on 50 patients with MRI-confirmed cases of cervical disc herniation. The patients received chiropractic care for cervical disc herniation, which included targeted adjustments of the cervical spine.

After two weeks of receiving these adjustments, more than half of the patients reported significant improvement in their conditions. After three months, an astonishing 85.7 percent noticed improvement in disability, as well as significantly less pain symptoms. What’s even more important is that not one patient reported any adverse affects from the chiropractic care they received.

Subluxation, or the misalignment of your vertebrae, can cause additional pressure and nerve interference on herniated discs. The adjustments performed by a chiropractor can realign the spine and help relieve the symptoms of disc herniation without the harmful effects of drug therapies or surgery.

Here’s the bottom line in chiropractic care — if you suffer from cervical disc herniation and have subluxations, you’re better off alive without the nerve interference they cause.
