Chiropractic Adjustments for Migraine Sufferers – Do They Really Work?

January 22, 2014

For more than 3,000 years, people have suffered debilitating pain and isolation periods due to migraines. Despite advances in modern medicine, determining a single cause for migraine headaches has remained elusive. Although drug therapies have helped alleviate symptoms, studies have shown that chiropractic adjustments are just as effective and do not carry the same harmful side effects of drugs.

The University of Maryland conducted a study on the effectiveness of chiropractic adjustments for migraine sufferers. Twenty-two percent of patients treated with chiropractic care reported more than a 90 percent reduction in the occurrence of migraine attacks.

In order to understand why chiropractic adjustments are so effective in relieving symptoms of migraine, it’s necessary to understand the cause of these attacks. Studies have shown that only 5 percent of migraine headaches are caused by disease or illness, while¬†95 percent of serious headaches and migraines are caused by stress-related factors. According to doctor of chiropractic, Dr. B McClelland, these numbers are very high due to the sedentary or repetitive nature of work most Americans perform.

People who work with computers, sewing machines or who must maintain a single position throughout their workday place high stress on the joints of the neck, which can lead to migraines. Doctors of chiropractic work to realign the vertebrae, which relieves pressure on the nerve endings and improves circulation. Many patients feel immediate relief after their adjustment, and those who maintain regular chiropractic care suffer far fewer bouts of migraine headaches.

Along with spinal adjustments to reduce occurrences of migraine, doctors of chiropractic can also provide exercises for stretching and strength, and ergonomics to balance treatment for whole body health.
